here is mitt romney trying to figure out the name of that thing that we americans call a dollar. i'm sorry i'm just a guy who cares an awful lot about my country you sir are a fool you know what that is my terror cells in your neighborhood don't want to wish to defeat terrorism on the on the ball and the credit to the public. consumer who is going to be the.
6:01 pm
happy friday guys all the nobel prize committee announced today that the european union has won the two thousand and twelve nobel peace prize i'm not even kidding and actual region of planet earth has been anointed a peace prize really your opinion hasn't quite been the symbol peace lately in fact the civil unrest in greece and spain alone is enough to remind us how much work there is yet to be done and who's in to receive the one point two million dollar prize money it should all go to greece no seriously give it to greece but i guess that's the nobel style right award first a hope for peace later first henry kissinger then the drone king barack obama wow the nobel prize committee is really going downhill i hate to admit it but the peace prize is a misnomer maybe to share a name it the nobel. debt and debt prize and that's why i'm breaking the set.
6:02 pm
ok guys so the vice presidential debate honestly they were a lot more entertaining than i was expecting joe biden with his creepy grin and maniacal laughter versus paul ryan the don't we i'd used car salesman it was gold so what do they actually talk about well let's see what the corporate media spin rooms had to say. build a delivery system are going to the pollution it's only they got it the boyfriends was forceful aggressive it dumb but it did mitt romney and paul ryan on their checks plan on their medicare advantage plan and threats most critically on the position of abortion and chris matthews like an overjoyed preteen girl over biden's perceived victory big change from last week where he practically lost it at the presidential debate so joe biden won well let's see what fox had to say the guy
6:03 pm
came across just thoughtful and substantive and fluid and respectful was paul ryan i thought supporter performance on his part tonight the third question is that was karl rove saying that paul ryan one wait why is bush is the lackey still relevant talking head see this irks me because this is where people get their news one channel tells you one thing another channel tells you another but it's all superficial malarkey or neither will tell you the truth let's see what c.n.n. had to say. so what we take away all in in terms of who won well clear winner unfortunately wolf i've got to tell you this is a dead heat a third for joe biden a third for paul ryan and a third are undecided tonight let me talk really burnett the best analysis you can give us is a tie guys seriously that's so predictable just stop stop trying please these corporate media spin rooms are where objective journalism goes to die all these pundits do is hide behind the establishment candidate that their network support.
6:04 pm
it's more the case of c.n.n. where they really can't seem to get their act together at all by the way i couldn't even concentrate on the debate because the interactive line graph looks like an e.k.g. hurt monitor which i guess makes sense when you see on c.n.n.'s ratings are flatlining so let me tell it like it is last night's debate was supposed to be focused on foreign policy so listen to what paul ryan had to say about defense cuts. to cut defense by a trillion dollars that's what we're talking about and the national security issues just are an increase we're going to cut eighty thousand soldiers twenty thousand marines one hundred twenty cargo planes are going to push the joint. and one more if these cuts go through our navy will be the small it is the smallest it has been since before world war one this invites weakness look do we believe in peace through strength you bet we do and that means you know there's paul ryan's sociopathic rational justifying how war actually means peace this is
6:05 pm
a question we should all be asking ourselves what threat are we facing in this country that justifies having an even bigger military in the next ten countries combined the answer is there is no justification and keep in mind that democrats and republicans agree with perpetual war take a listen to what ryan thinks is the biggest threat we face today. to a nuclear armed iran which triggers a nuclear arms race in the middle east this is the world's largest sponsor of terrorism and he's dead it only shows up wiping an entire country off the map they call us the great satan and if they get nuclear weapons other people the neighborhood will pursue their nuclear weapons as well look i'm in no way endorsing the iranian regime but this is a load of crap the arms race began in the region when israel obtained their nuclear arsenal but tony expect any of these politicians to tell the truth about israel that would be political suicide. and we wonder why there's so much anti-american
6:06 pm
sentiment in the middle east well i'm glad that the tax rate and personal faith are the most pressing issues facing this country and what they as men would bring to the table nope you didn't hear a peep about drones n.d.a. civil liberties targeted killings torture climate change food safety the list goes on and on look guys vice president biden and congressman ryan may have appeared to have a challenging debate with real differences but that's not the case it's all big facade folks all the corporate media is squabbling over who one no one is talking about who lost us because we're held captive to an illusion the illusion of choice. this week marks one hundred days for the first democratically elected president mohamed morsi of egypt from the outset there were many doubts about whether he'd be
6:07 pm
able to embody the spirit of the arab spring and take charge of a country tainted with a collapsing economy and weak infrastructure since then morsi has dismantled the overarching rule of the military and ousted former move mubarak loyalists from his administration but what challenges does he have ahead and how we usher in a new era of equality for women and religious minorities and here to talk about all that and more i'm joined by so hard professor of law at texas. university thank you so much for coming on thank you for the time have you so you recently spoke on a panel at georgetown university called rule of law of rhetoric versus reality and egypt's transition to democracy so far when you talk about this we've observed it is a distraction for a hundred days now what is the rhetoric and what is the reality well the rhetoric is that he is going to change the country he's going to turn it around and he is going to use values and principles to clean up the country because it has its share of problems the reality is that in one hundred days he's done very little now
6:08 pm
in my view he set himself up to fail because no one can do much in one hundred days however he has not improved the economy significantly the trash is still in the streets the food expenses are continue to rise fuel expenses are rising so one hundred days he hasn't done very much his rhetoric is very attractive and very appealing he talks democracy to you know how to talk the talk and i give him credit for that and i heard him speak in new york city where he was encouraging the gyptian diaspora to invest in egypt and i think that is a good idea in theory however if he wants our investments he's going to have to increase transparency and he's going to have to promote the law so that we know our investments don't get embezzled like they did in the former regime so that we. so just this week egypt released the first draft of the constitution. you know this is unique because essentially throughout the old constitution writing another one it's
6:09 pm
a huge endeavor i mean what criticisms and challenges does it present with this moving forward well there is a couple of issues first is the composition of the constitutional assembly there is a lot of debate as to whether it is flawed by design there is overrepresentation fees and muslim brotherhood such that it's not proportionate to the representation in the society and not enough representation of minorities women christians and liberals so that has created some legitimacy problems and there have been members who have resigned due to that but putting that aside they they they have done a few things that they have failed to do a few things that i think are really important first they have not explicitly outlawed torture in the constitution now uses something very vague over the law uses something vague like physical harm and in light of the checkered history actually the bad record of the mubarak regime there has to be an explicit permission on torture and there has to be
6:10 pm
a very explicit punishment of those who torture to stop it from happening in the future the second is there is no specific provision that grants equality to or to women it is there's an exception of it has to be in accordance with the law and the problem with that is you're getting into the whole religion being part of the constitution which is already there in article two people have decided egyptians have decided and that is their right that article two is going to essentially state that egypt is going to be ruled in accordance with the principles of law with the addition they just dad did this provision article two that christians and jews so people of the book would be able to practice their faith in accordance with their religious precepts so islam would not be imposed on them but that takes care of the obvious fact that she is going to be the foundation but they don't want to put in a provision that exposes. he states women will be quality before the law they are creating this exception so that's that's the second issue well let's hear what more
6:11 pm
you said about this exact issue. and i think we have that quote right here he says i will not prevent a woman from being nominated as a candidate for the presidential campaign this is not in the constitution this is not in the law but if you want to ask me if i will vote for her or not that is something else that is different now when he says something like this really does kind of stifle the public persona of putting forward this progressive takeover of egypt well i don't think people few him as a progressive take over there and i think that he is considered a moderate within the islam moderate satirist right now with an islamist parties and the question is will the brotherhood go the salaf you route which to use an analogy from the united states' political system will they the saudis are like the tea partiers the far friends right and they don't have a very large representation egyptian society the brotherhood is a diverse group of islamist moderates to more left leaning where will morsi go will you lean more towards the right and get pushed by the southeast or will he go more
6:12 pm
towards the left which is where the youth the muslim brotherhood youth are going but the issue of women and minorities is a very sensitive one primarily because a lot of egyptians don't want to accept that it's a problem they are part of the reason why they are they don't want to support laws that are explicit is not so much that they don't support women's rights or the rights of christians it's that they're in denial that there is a problem first place and that then creates an impediment how do you how do you pass reforms when the community this is china is not fully aware of the disparities that are happening and that's again part of the transparency problem and part of the lack of information accurate information available to the public and so i mean one of the things that i focus on my scholarship in my work with the egyptian american rule of law association is that easy needs of freedom of information law good governments open governments law and that way. when morsi says something we can hold them to it ok where the facts give us the information as long as it's not a national security secret that would threaten the sovereignty and we will see what
6:13 pm

mr.
6:15 pm
yesterday marked the tenth anniversary of the senate authorizing military force against iraq which started a legal war with no end a war costing us trillions of dollars and even worse the lives of thousands of americans and at least one million iraqis and if you watched the vice presidential debate last night a debate supposedly about foreign policy you'd see that the iraq war has become a distant memory and it all serves as a reminder that we need to look outside the two party system to have them to hear the voices that haven't forgotten here to talk about why alternative leadership is needed i'm joined now by cindy sheehan a fierce antiwar activist mother of a fallen iraq and soldier and vice presidential nominee of the peace and freedom party sidney awesome to have you on. i have a it's great to be you and congratulations on your show i'm really proud of you thank you so i'm sure i don't know if you did but i caught the presidential debates as like the vice presidential debates the whole thing just felt like one giant
6:16 pm
campaign advertisement with them bickering with one another what did you think about them and what do you think was omitted that should have been addressed well i guess i probably should have watched them since i'm running for vice president but i had you know i had other plans and i'm planning on catching up later today on it because i do want to write a response that is credible and does have some substance i did see some of the coverage and i saw some of the it was mostly same like it was i rolling and iraq being you know just a bunch of junior high tech so. you know i just basically know if you've done this for a while that it's going to be just more of the same and you can pretty much predict what's going to be happening and it is very predictable at those points to do so you're on the ticket as the peace and freedom vice presidential candidate for the presidential election what is this country why does this country need to follow this particular vision. well and peace and freedom has been
6:17 pm
a ballot card in california since one nine hundred sixty seven sixty eight it grew out of a response against the vietnam war and the protests and then the response of the police. who of course violently suppressed it and the peace and freedom party so it's a party of he's people ask me all the time why don't we have education has a right why don't we have health care as a right why don't we have housing and healthy food and clean water and clean air as a right well it's because trillions of dollars get sucked into the military industrial complex and to the empire so one of our main focus. peace and freedom party. as ending empire you know abolishing the cia abolishing all of these agencies that are for oppression their violence and then using that money or human needs i watched the presidential debate last week and they kept on talking about
6:18 pm
entitlement but in most is entitled minutes are called human rights and so we need a party that puts human need corporate greed. we just recently had joel stein on and i asked her about this and i just want to get your take as well what do you say to people who continue to vote for the lesser of two evils mentality get trapped in that paradigm and consider anything other than voting for one of the two establishment candidates will perpetuate the system as a wasted vote. well i think that. you know that's really easy the two corporate parties the democrats the republicans they're the party of wall street they're the party of the war machine they're the party of economic. oppression and environmental devastation and so if you actually give your precious vote some one of those parties you're supporting things that are anti human they don't own our votes they don't earn our votes and until we realize that.
6:19 pm
nothing's going to change if we keep putting one of the candidates of the one percent back in office and you know we realize it's a system where we realize that the vote is essentially broke and then corrupt in this country so we realize that outside organizing outside the box ballot box organizing outside every four years of the presidential election is far more important than going in and voting for any candidate so i really can't wait to the elections are over and i hope we can get back down the business of organizing this grassroots peaceful revolution that we need to happen to overturn this system because i'm afraid we're not going to break that habit of constantly voting for the evil evil a or evil be you know it is a corporate coup to talk was already in effect and it really is an illusion of choice at this point. eight hundred seventy six degrees really is when corporations were given human rights with the responsibilities of citizenship so it's been
6:20 pm
ingrained in our country since the beginning and i don't think it'll it'll be dislodged by their romney or obama obviously obama's already been president for years he's like the bush's war on terror he's expanded the corporate. and environmental destruction and i'm not willing to give romney a chance to have a. bomb is now the drone king as i like to quote him but let's talk about let's go back in time a little bit you were propped up as symbol a. during the bush administration from the progressive left and also the establishment media and then when the media realized that you weren't going away the democratic party got back into office with obama they started to marginalize you they started to demonize you because they didn't see your narrative as theirs anymore how did you feel when you realized that essentially you were being used as a political pawn for the democratic party only when they needed you. well you know
6:21 pm
of course i saw it happening while it was happening and i started to distance myself from the democratic party and i will i'm a lifelong democrat i left the party in two thousand and seven and when i left the party many people in the in the so-called peace movement started bashing me too and demonizing me and so i realized at that point we never even had that much of the antiwar movement when bush was president we had an anti bush movement so since obama's been president since the democrats took over congress in two thousand and seven when they were non-rated as majority in the house you know it's been a very lonely protest but you know what the comrades in the colleagues that i still have in the star go are ones that i know who will be in it and tell things we really did change they're not fair weather friends are not fair fair weather antiwar activists we're peace activists and we're not going to stop and i just hope
6:22 pm
that this. is concluded and i can i can you know join casey peacefully knowing that my grandchildren will have a peaceful world that puts human needs like i said of. corporate greed so the people who are still in the moment are strong and and you know we work every day whether the media is covering us or not a lot of right wing people will e-mail me and say where have you been you know you're such a hypocrite you protested when obama was prez i me. this was president i call obama or bush obama. they're like so you were doing it when bush was president where are you now well you know i have to peace in washington d.c. since obama's been president very few people attend then no media coverage i want to martha's vineyard for the first year obama was president to protest his vacation there in which i thought was you know massively inappropriate and i haven't stopped
6:23 pm
i've been arrested still in front of the white house i had to stay away order from the white house for four months i couldn't go anywhere near it without being late as the media is not reporting on it doesn't mean that it's not happening you have not skipped a beat i remember seeing you in san diego right after obama got elected and you were just like we shouldn't be surprises been saying that he's going to do these things as the afghanistan war take you know drone bombings in pakistan i mean you were right on point and that's why i have a lot of respect for you because you are a true advocate for peace and you don't align yourself with the party like so many fairweather peace activists do but i wanted to segue into this you know we've seen obama touting the rock war is over touting the as somber lot in death as pretty much as biggest victory which is disgusting in itself to celebrate death why do people believe these things i mean we know that the war isn't over there are still a lot of questions about bin ladin that were never provided any evidence for why does no one question at the repeated ad nauseum are we just sort of appeal to
6:24 pm
authority here and just trust when they tell us things. well you know of course and i. just roundly criticized and ridiculed for questioning the official story of bin ladin when we've been told he's been dead since two thousand and one two thousand and three two thousand and seven and so we i think as responsible citizens we should question everything our government says no matter who's in power and no matter who says and even if it's rock quarry. were over. that was a george bush accomplishment because they're the ones that have the status of forces agreement with the iraqi puppet government before bush left office but we both know that the violence continues and we're still occupying iraq and even if osama bin ladin were kill the day they said he was the way they said he was that's
6:25 pm
not a campaign slogan that's not something that people should have celebrated or. a vote for obama because of it even if it all happened it went down the way it went down and he should have been captured he should have been put on trial it should have been transparent and let's talk about obama's assassination program where at least three american citizens have been. and executed on obama's order is with a transparent trial and i don't understand why people who have a conscience and people who care about humanity with even consider voting for somebody like that i love that you just brought up the in term agreement between bush and iraq administration as you say because people can gradually obama's ending the war when really bush did have that agreement to end and the war even though we know tens of thousands of military contractors will be there but but but the bomber wanted to extend the war everybody wanted to have said yeah you could extend it.
6:26 pm
but there are people who aren't and then are. you know there's a but it's just it's just that he's just a big fraud just a big liar but he's a politician you can't expect anything more from a politicians than a we're almost out of time but i just wanted to say you know yesterday was the ten year anniversary of the senate authorizing the use of force against iraq here we are ten years later you know trillions spent over a million dead since that moment that casey died cindy your life changed forever do you feel looking back that there's been justice. oh my god of course not and that's one of the things that i seek i seek justice for my son for the lies the lies and the prophet syrian that led to but also the death of over a million iraqis and i think accountability would help bring increased peace to the world if you know a u.s.
6:27 pm
president or. regime knew that they were going to be held accountable for their actions. it would stop the horrible things from happening there's been too much too much death and destruction and not enough justice or accountability so you know it will keep working for that and not just it's not just about you know it's about this is you know it's about holding obama accountable for tens of thousands of libya and his drone bombings in pakistan and. afghanistan and yemen and somalia you know it's time that. it's war profiteering to be held accountable like it used to be held accountable here in the united states these would be against a lot of profit off of war i know it was. absolutely sunny thank you so much for your courage your activism i look up to a lot and thank you for coming on you're providing the alternative that people need you are a true advocate for peace thank you cindy sheehan. cities right we can't have
6:28 pm
justice about accountability and we can't change a system if we keep looking at the system for change through change can't come from the top it never has and it never will it can only come from us the people the grass roots it's time to break out of the two party dictatorship and join the movement because we have the ability to make change but the solution has to start with you. me eat eat eat. eat eat eat. eat eat eat. see.
6:29 pm
you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you limp something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm tom harvey welcome to the big picture. wealthy british. that's right.
